Clean Stoves Project Guatemala
Another project that we will be supporting and assisting during this marathon is the Clean Stoves initiative by Dun Anton Grech in Izabal, Guatemala. These stoves replace the open fires and smoke typically found in the poor households of the community, where Dun Anton has been carrying out invaluable missionary work for many years. The smoke is toxic because cooking is done using firewood, without any kind of chimney.The clean stoves project uses about 70% less firewood for cooking, allowing children more time to attend school instead of spending their early mornings searching for and cutting wood. Anyone who regularly follows the Il-Missjoni Bżonnok marathons, which Fondazzjoni U organizes three times a year, has surely heard of the Maltese organization Love and Peace, led by Mariella Calleja. With the support and help she receives from the generous hearts of Maltese and Gozitan people, she carries out valuable missionary work in Kenya. In mission countries where Maltese or Gozitan missionaries work, we often encounter people—mostly children—who, due to their own malnutrition and that of their mothers before birth, suffer from a form of disability that prevents them from walking properly because their legs do not function as they should. As a result, these children end up destined to spend their lives seated on a wooden or plastic chair, as their families cannot afford to buy a wheelchair that would allow them to move around and at least get some fresh air outside. This project supports Maltese missionaries safeguarding vulnerable individuals worldwide. Donations help build a protective wall for an orphanage in Kenya housing abused girls, expand a center in Burundi for street children, and fund a crisis center in Madagascar rescuing children from abuse and exploitation.
